Where River Meets Sea
Discover the meeting point of the Tornio River and Bothnian Bay in the heart of Destination Tornio-Haparanda. Lapland Lagoon Resort brings together coastal experiences, accommodation, sauna, dining, and archipelago adventures in a place shaped by water, ice, and centuries of local life. The area has a long history of log floating, with timber travelling down the Tornio River to be gathered here before continuing its journey by water or land. Today, the same waters provide a gateway to year-round Arctic experiences.
Lapland Lagoon is part of the arctic archipelago shared by Finland and Sweden, where two countries meet across the northern Bothnian Bay. The resort is a natural starting point for exploring both the river and the sea, with the changing seasons creating a different landscape and rhythm throughout the year.
A Coastal Resort Rooted in Local Heritage
The historic Villa Merilinna offers accommodation in a former border guard station by the sea. Six bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, provide a comfortable base for families, couples, and small groups looking for a distinctive stay. From October 2026, the resort’s new Sauna World adds three saunas, outdoor hot tubs, a sauna bar, and lounge spaces, while Kota Restaurant Loimu joins the existing Restaurant Magasiini to bring new flavours and atmosphere to the waterfront.
A Borderless Base for Arctic Adventures
Located just minutes from Haparanda and close to the centre of Tornio, Lapland Lagoon Resort is easy to combine with a wider journey through the Arctic Coast. Here, the border between Finland and Sweden becomes part of the experience: one river, one sea, two countries, and an archipelago that connects them. Stay by the water, explore the islands, relax in the sauna, or head out onto the frozen sea – Lapland Lagoon offers a year-round way to experience the coastal north.

Summer in the Arctic Archipelago
When the ice retreats, the same waters open a route into the Finnish and Swedish archipelago. Summer boat excursions reveal remote islands shaped by the land uplift, historic fishing settlements, and landscapes where traces of generations of coastal life remain visible. Discover the islands, hear stories of fishermen and smugglers, and experience the archipelago at a slower pace, surrounded by the open sea and northern skies. The Haparanda archipelago includes destinations such as Sandskär and Selkä-Sarvi, with their historic fishing heritage and distinctive island landscapes.
Arctic Experiences on the Frozen Sea
In winter, Lapland Lagoon becomes the starting point for journeys onto the frozen Bothnian Bay. Guided snowmobile-sled excursions lead into the archipelago between Finland and Sweden, where a sea camp offers a glimpse into traditional life on the frozen sea. Try traditional net fishing beneath the ice, travel between islands by sled, warm up in a sauna, and look out across the vast northern sky with the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights.
For a different kind of Arctic encounter, sea ice floating offers the chance to walk onto the frozen sea and float safely among the ice floes in a specially designed survival suit. The experience combines the stillness of the winter landscape with the unusual sensation of weightlessness in the icy sea.
