Tapion Tupa in Kalajoki Achieves Sustainable Travel Finland Certification

We are thrilled to announce that Tapion Tupa, a beloved venue in Kalajoki, has been awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland certification. This achievement is a testament to their long-term commitment to sustainability and responsible travel. Tapion Tupa has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact through a variety of initiatives.

Clever energy saving and resourcing
The company uses solar panels, domestic energy sources and woodchip heating, which is partially sourced from their own forest. These efforts ensure that energy consumption is both sustainable and controlled. Additionally, energy-efficient technologies like LED and sensor lights, along with automatic taps, help conserve electricity and water.

A naturally sustainable food philosophy
The food philosophy at Tapion Tupa is a return to basics—though in truth, they never left them. The daily lunch buffet offers home-cooked meals in the cozy main building which is built from logs and painted red. The beautiful house and the traditional food make it feel like a visit to grandma’s house, providing a comforting break from the hustle of modern life. In addition, their bakery honors traditional recipes, ensuring that every bite reflects the rich heritage of the region. Their dedication to minimizing food waste and offering fantastic local treats in their lunch and coffee shop is a hallmark of their operation.

The journey to achieving the Sustainable Travel Finland certification has been thorough. Tapion Tupa first completed both the Laatutonni Q1000 quality award program, tailored specifically for the tourism industry, and the HI-Q&S certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). These accomplishments paved the way for their successful participation in Visit Finland’s Sustainable Travel Finland program.

We congratulate Tapion Tupa on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to seeing their continued efforts in promoting sustainable tourism on the arctic coast of Finland!
